In 2013, Google and Mozilla announced that their respective browsers would begin phasing out support for NPAPI plugins such as the Unity Web Player in favor of modern web technologies like WebGL. Unity began development of WebGL publishing to accommodate this shift, but still provided the web player plugin in the meantime. We began to build our applications using both technologies to give customers using newer browsers an easy option to login without installing additional software while continuing to support the plugin already installed by many.
Fast-forward to 2016 and Chrome has completely removed support for plugins, and Unity has stopped supporting their web player plugin as well. With the understanding that schools do not always adopt updates as quickly as individuals, we continued to support the plugin for two years after officially being unsupported by browser vendors and Unity Technologies. Fortunately, both have made great strides in WebGL performance. In order to benefit from these advancements we must publish our applications using a newer version of Unity that only supports WebGL.
For most customers, you are already using a WebGL compatible browser. If you aren't sure, simply try to login to an application. If your browser is unsupported, you will be directed to our system requirements page with an analysis and suggestions.
